Physical Theatre and Ensemble Workshop by David Glass

An immersive physical theatre and ensemble workshop led by David Glass, one of the
pioneering figures of British and international physical theatre. This intensive experience
invites participants to explore presence, movement, play, and collective intelligence, placing
the body at the heart of storytelling.
Rooted in 45 years of international practice, this workshop introduces the core principles of
physical theatre and ensemble work as living, adaptable tools—for performance, teaching,
leadership, and life.
“I am inspired by your thinking and experience and community in the theatre. Of course
your objective overall is vital and true.”
— Mark Rylance, Oscar-winning actor

The Focus of the Workshop
The workshop centres on two interconnected practices:
1. Physical Theatre
Developing the body as a clear, responsive, and expressive instrument through:
• Presence, focus, and readiness to play
• Élan: good contact, good suspension, good energy, and pleasure
• The fundamental grammar of physical theatre: impulse, journey, fixed point
• Breath, rhythm, dynamics, and physical articulation
2. The Art of Ensemble
Exploring ensemble as both interpretive and generative practice:
• Central and peripheral vision
• Giving and receiving: listening, response, and timing
• Lowering judgement: “Yes, and” / “What if?”
• Chorus work and group intelligence
• Ensemble movement and collective storytelling

“David Glass remains one of the pioneers and key figures of British and International
Theatre.”
— John McGrath, Artistic Director, Manchester International Festival
Seven Levels of Tension
Inspired by Jacques Lecoq, participants will physically embody the seven levels of tension to
explore:
• Character and emotional range
• Rhythm, stillness, and intensity
• How tension shapes narrative and presence
What You Will Gain
• A clear, practical understanding of physical and ensemble theatre techniques
• A deeper connection to the body as a storytelling tool
• Increased confidence working intuitively within a group
• Transferable skills applicable to performance, teaching, leadership, and creative
collaboration
“David Glass is one of the great pioneers of physical and devised theatre.”
— Simon McBurney, Artistic Director, Complicité
