In connection with the Marathon Apocalyptica Symposium
We are pleased to announce the presentation of Michael Thoma’s book, The Aesthetic of
the Aesthetic On the pursuit of Truth through illusion (2024) Publishing House Atropos — a
work that restores aesthetics to its deepest and most original domain: ontology. In this
book, Thoma begins from a fundamental and urgent question: “Who is going to save us from
ourselves?”
From this starting point, he reveals that mimesis is not representation nor image, but zōon
— a living process through which being is formed and disclosed. Art does not depict the
world; it brings the world into presence.
The Aesthetic of the Aesthetic stands as a powerful defense of art as an act of truth, not a
surface of impressions. It reunites theory and practice, aesthetics and ontology, and restores
art to its essential role as a force that shapes the human being and the conditions of human
presence.
The book serves as:
a handbook for artists,
a tool for philosophers,
a foundation for educators,
a guide for all who work with the “human must” — the necessity of human action, presence,
and truth.
Connection with the Marathon Apocalyptica Symposium
This book launch is presented in direct dialogue with the Marathon Apocalyptica
Symposium, where the themes of embodied education, collective intelligence, and the
citizen‑artist are central. Thoma’s exploration of mimesis as a living act of truth resonates
deeply with the Symposium’s focus on:
the Marathon Warriors as a model of embodied citizenship,
the unity of actor–dancer–athlete–warrior,
the idea that art is not representation but praxis,
the recovery of technē as a mode of knowledge,
and the urgent need to reconnect art with human presence, responsibility, and action.

The book provides a philosophical foundation for the Symposium’s vision: that art,
education, and collective practice can restore the human being to a state of clarity, rhythm,
and ethical action — the very principles embodied by the Marathon landscape and the
Apocalyptica project.
